A comprehensive survey conducted by BeWell, Hua Hin Today, and the International Business Management department at Assumption University, published on April 2, 2025, offers an unprecedented look into this growing community’s experiences, preferences, and challenges.

A Diverse, Established Community
The survey revealed that nearly 59% of Hua Hin’s retiree residents hail from Western Europe—including the U.K., Switzerland, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Germany, and France—while about 12% come from the United States. Smaller contingents represent South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and other regions of Asia and Africa. Remarkably, 81% of respondents were male, and roughly half fell between the ages of 66 and 75. Nearly 68% reported being married or living with a partner—often in long-term relationships with Thai nationals. Far from temporary visitors, these retirees truly put down roots: the average length of stay in Thailand is 12.5 years (median seven years), with one quarter calling Hua Hin home for over a decade and the largest segment (31%) having lived here between five and ten years.

Financial Security and Professional Backgrounds
Two-thirds of survey participants had held salaried positions in organizations prior to retirement, about 20% were self-employed, and only 3% had not worked before retiring. This suggests a community with solid professional credentials and financial stability—key factors enabling a comfortable life abroad on pensions or savings.

What Makes Hua Hin So Alluring?
Several factors consistently emerged as the prime draws for this international retiree community:

• Peaceful, Laid-Back Lifestyle: Respondents praised Hua Hin’s calm atmosphere and clean, uncrowded streets—an appealing contrast to Thailand’s bustling cities.
  
  
• Beach Access and Climate: The town’s long, pristine shoreline and year-round warm weather, especially during Europe’s cold winter months, were cited as major attractions. Many expatriates spend November through February here to escape the chill and soak up sun and sea breezes.
  
  
• Affordable Cost of Living: Compared to home countries or other Thai destinations, Hua Hin offers excellent value, enabling retirees to stretch their pensions or savings without compromising quality of life.
  
  
• Convenient Connectivity: Proximity to Bangkok and its international airport, along with Hua Hin’s own airport and extensive road links, makes travel to modern healthcare, shopping, and entertainment hubs effortless.

• Leisure and Social Activities: Over half (56%) dine out regularly, 51% participate in sports—particularly golf, which is abundantly available—and 43% enjoy daily beach visits. The “Scandinavia Village” provides a supportive, active-living enclave for those 50 and over.
  
  
• High-Quality Healthcare: Local hospitals and medical centers earned an average satisfaction score of 4.2 out of 5, with 84% rating their care as “very good” or “excellent,” ensuring retirees feel secure and well-supported.
